Visiting Dynamic Earth in Holyrood, Edinburgh
by David Wheater of Tours of Edinburgh

Our Dynamic Earth is a very popular science centre located in Edinburgh, right next door to the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood.

The science centre was set up in 1999 with the purpose of engaging its visitors in a fun and interactive way in all aspects of planet Earth and environmental science. With the slogan 'the Mother Earth of all adventures', visitors are taken on an exciting journey through the Earth's past, present and future, from the Big Bang to the creation of the planet, its evolution and future.

Spanning a journey back through 15,000 million years, visitors can experience everything from flying over glaciers, to a tropical rainstorm, or even a volcano exploding under their feet. The whole journey brings all your senses alive as you literally touch, smell and feel your way around the planet. There's even a real iceberg beneath the magical aurora borealis! It's a fantastic multisensory journey of discovery, and will keep children enthralled for hours.

Spread over eleven different 'Earthscapes', clever interactive technology, along with 3D and 4D films, does a great job of explaining how the continents and oceans of Earth took shape and life evolved on the planet. Although mainly geared towards children, it's also interesting for adults, who may have forgotten much from school geography classes!

The centre also deals with serious environmental problems, like climate change and population growth, which affect the future of the Earth and future generations. Regular workshops are held throughout the year for local schools and the centre is also a very popular conference and events venue.

If you're looking for a fun way to educate children, then Our Dynamic Earth is a fantastic place to take the whole family. Learning should always be fun, which Our Dynamic Earth delivers in spades. There's also an excellent cafe and shop.

Dynamic Earth is located next to the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood and opens at 10 a.m., 7 days a week (except in low season between November to March when opening days are Wednesday to Sunday only). Visit www.dynamicearth.co.uk for further information.
