Edinburgh's Christmas Markets & Fair Rides 2017
Edinburgh's Christmas Markets & Fair Rides - 2017
by David Wheater of Tours of Edinburgh
We're well into a Scottish winter now, so it's always nice to see the city lit up and full of excitement for the Edinburgh Christmas Festival 2017.
There are quite a few Christmas venues around the city, but the main Christmas markets are to be found in East Princes Street Gardens and George Street, and the ice rink & bar in St Andrew Square.
Last week I decided to challenge myself to see if I could put together a short film of the festival to showcase all it's got to offer visitors to Edinburgh. Some highlights include The Drop in George Street (which looks really terrifying - see video!), the Star Flyer next to the Scott Monument (equally exhilarating!) and the more sedate Forth 1 Big Wheel. The Yeti ride also looks great fun. There's also lots of great fair rides for kids in Santa's Land (E. Princes Street Gardens) including a helter-skelter, a lovely little train and a twinkling Christmas tree maze which is always fun - and not forgetting Santa himself in his lovely grotto.
If you have the time to visit Edinburgh I can really recommend it. There's a lovely atmosphere in the city and it'll really put you in the Christmas mood. I would, if you can, consider visiting on a weekday, as the weekends can get very busy. I'd also recommend leaving your car on the outskirts of the city at Ingliston Park and Ride near the airport and get the tram into the city centre, which is cheap and convenient.
Forget work for a while, grab friends and family and go and have some serious fun this Christmas - and I dare you to go on The Drop!
Merry Christmas everybody.
